    Tips for Shoveling Snow Safely

We all know that shoveling snow is not fun, but there is often no avoiding it.  If you do try to avoid it and let it melt, it often refreezes making it even more dangerous for you.  So here are some tips to keep you safe!

First, be prepared!  Stretch gently before bundling up and make sure you dress in layers.  You are better off breaking a sweat, rather than shivering and not being able to complete your shoveling.  Another tip that many people may not know is that waxing your shovel beforehand will prevent the snow from sticking to your shovel.

Now that you are prepared to shovel, you have to focus on the correct form.  Bend your knees and lift from your legs.  Most people tend to throw their backs out shoveling because they hunch over and lift from their back.  Be sure to keep the blade of the shovel close to you as you lift, to reduce the strain on the back.  Try to think of shoveling as a workout, you don’t just workout one arm or one leg.  It is important to alternate sides and work all the muscles equally.  Also, if there is a heavy snowfall, don’t try to clean it up with a single scoop.  Go layer by layer to avoid lifting toomuch and causing harm to your body.  It might take a little bit longer but your body will thank you!

Stay safe and warm this winter!
