An Otago based Falls Prevention Program

Physical Solutions is pleased to introduce our Falls Prevention Program, providing a highly skilled option for patients who are at risk for falls.  The Otago Exercise Program, which was developed, tested, and proven (in four randomized controlled clinical trials) to be effective for preventing falls among adults 65 years of age and older, will be the key component in the plan of care for all patients participating in this falls prevention program.  This Otago program has been shown to improve strength and balance, two of the most readily modifiable risk factors for falls, and reduce the risk of falls by 35 percent among high risk individuals.

Falls and fall related injuries have become one of the most significant public health concerns for older adults in the US today.  More than 30 percent of people aged 65 and older will fall each year with that number increasing to 50 percent for those aged 80 and older.  For those who fall, twenty to thirty percent will suffer moderate to severe injuries which will significantly reduce their mobility and may ultimately require them to move into a long-term care facility.
The costs associated with caring for those who sustain fall related injuries has also become a significant burden on the health care system.  By 2020, the annual direct and indirect cost of fall-related injuries for people aged 65 and older is expected to reach almost $55 billion.  With that in mind, both practitioners and insurers will look for ways to stem these costs by promoting interventions that will reduce the older adults risk for falls.
Research has shown that implementing fall prevention programs for high-risk older adults can produce a net-cost savings of almost nine dollars for every dollar invested.  Programs designed to prevent falls can save hospital admission costs, long-term care costs, and successfully help older adults maintain their quality of life.  Unfortunately, many fall prevention programs are implemented in communities without regard to evidence of effectiveness.

If you have a history of falls, present with decreased strength, or have limited balance, you may benefit from participating in a supervised fall prevention program.  Contact Physical Solutions today for more info on how you can improve your balance and reduce your risk for falls.
